Fiji's military overthrew the elected government Tuesday after weeks of threats, locking down the capital and putting the prime minister under house arrest. Commodore Frank Bainimarama, the armed forces chief credited with resolving Fiji's last coup, led this takeover.

Senate committee approves Gates' nomination |
The Senate Armed Services Committee unanimously approved President Bush's defense secretary nomination Tuesday, the committee's outgoing chairman said. The decision came after Robert Gates testified for hours, telling committee members that the United States was not winning the war in Iraq.
