WILL VIRGINIA RACE TURN ON ILLEGAL ALIENS ISSUE?

One of the key issues that separates the Republican and Democrat candidates for Governor in Virginia is how the two plan to deal with illegal aliens. The Republican candidate is vowing to deal aggressively with the issue, including using state troopers to enforce the law. The Democrat is saying that rhetorical attacks on illegals reflects a racist attitude. If Republican nominee Jerry Kilgore wins the November contest, other candidates across the country may seize on the illegal alien issue as a winning formula as we move into the 2006 election season, although his weakness on tax issues may be a bigger factor in whether he gets elected or not.
