There are three very simple ways that we could force real reform of the tax code, and it wouldn't cost much to accomplish this seemingly impossible task.

First, move election day to April 16. Give taxpayers a shot at politicians the day after we file our tax returns. I believe we would see an IMMEDIATE reduction in tax rates and an enormous push for greater simplicity and transparency in the tax code. This one simple adjustment would also end the need for further discussion of "term limits."

Second, require all members of Congress to assemble in their respective chambers at 8 am on tax day with their blank tax forms, their receipts, 1099 forms, a calculator and a pencil. Nothing more. Oh, except a copy of the U.S. tax code. They must complete their return, claiming all deductions possible, without ANY errors by 8 pm. Any mistake, no matter how minor, and they lose their job in Congress and must spend one year in jail. I think we would quickly see significant tax reform!

Finally, instead of taxpayers having their paycheck reduced by federal income tax withholding and social security taxes being deducted BEFORE they get their takehome pay, taxpayers would get FULL payment from their employer. Then, just like we have to pay cable bills, water bills and other expenses, taxpayers would then have to write a check to the Federal Government for their taxes each pay period. If people began to understand that it is THEIR money that the Government wastes, and that it is THEIR money not federal money that fuels government, we might get a bit more engaged in the process. And it would suddenly be REAL money, because we would have it in hand and have to give it up rather than never getting it in the first place. It would only take about a month until we had a real tax revolt in this country!
