DEPUTY GOVERNOR BACK IN SPOTLIGHT OF SCANDAL.
December 19, 2005 - 09:29
Governor Phil Bredesen's right hand man continued to direct promotions and other THP business AFTER the Governor instructed him to stay out of THP business. Remember Jack Nicholson in "A Few Good Men?" He ordered his men not to harm an inept Marine, but didn't really mean it. He got caught. When Governor Bredesen told Cooley to stay out of THP business did he really mean it, or did he wink at Cooley and let him continue business as usual? Or, did Cooley simply disobey a direct order from the Governor? IF it is the first, then the Governor has a lot to answer for. IF it is the second, then Cooley should immediately be fired. If the Governor does not immediately fire him, I guess we will know it was the first. CLICK HERE. |

DID FRIST USE CHARITY FOR POLITICAL PURPOSES?
December 19, 2005 - 09:29
Senator Bill Frist's anti-AIDS effort has raised $4.4 million and distributed about 75% of that. Most charities cannot boast of overhead that only consumes 25% of what they raise. It is not clear if the amounts paid to the Senators political fundraising advisors includes the amounts paid for the events they put together. In other words, are the costs of the charitable events staged by the firm included in their fees? The Tennessean does not make that clear. It appears that the fundraisers made about 10% of what they raised; is that reasonable or not based on what other fundraising firms charge? At this point, it is not clear whether the story is a smear campaign or revelation of some questionable activity by Senator Frist. Big corporations giving big money to the favorite charities of elected officials certainly smells, whether it is donations to the Clinton Library or Senator Bill Frist's AIDS charity. CLICK HERE. |

HYPOCRISY ON PARADE IN THE TENNESSEAN.
December 19, 2005 - 09:30
In Saturday's edition the Tennessean editorialized in favor of the idea of Congress requiring cable television companies to offer their programming to customers on an a la carte basis. In other words, customers should be able to purchase the specific programming they want rather than paying more for a bundle of programming that includes stations they don't actually want to purchase. The Tennessean thinks that giving customers the ability to pick and choose what they want, and pay lower prices for getting only what they want, is a good idea. Great. When can we expect the Tennessean to offer customers the choice of buying just the Sports section for only a dime rather than paying 50 cents for the entire "bundled" newspaper??? CLICK HERE. |
