TENNESSEE STATE SENATOR JERRY COOPER INDICTED.
August 22, 2006 - 17:13
Another member of the Tennessee General Assembly has been indicted. This time it is Democrat State Senator Jerry Cooper. He is not up for re-election this Fall, but I don't expect him to make it to the next election without a guilty plea or conviction. Senator Kathryn Bowers, another Democrat, is expected to enter a guilty plea in her own federal bribery case within the next few weeks (as noted below). CLICK HERE.

BOWERS MAY BE CLOSE TO GUILTY PLEA.
August 22, 2006 - 12:29
State Senator Kathryn Bowers, who faces serious federal bribery charges but STILL got won her Democrat Party primary in August by a huge margin, may be getting ready to plead guilty. She will probably still get reelected in Memphis, even after she pleads guilty. CLICK HERE.

NAIFEH HAS SOME EXPENSIVE CARPET!
August 22, 2006 - 12:23
House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh is apparently living large on the taxpayer's money. The recent refurbishing of the State Capitol included $21,279 for new carpet in the Speaker's suite. Remember the controversy over former U.T. President John Shumaker getting $40,000 of expensive carpet for HIS office? CLICK HERE. Will Naifeh feel some of the same heat? CLICK HERE.
Terry Frank has some photos of the nifty carpet and $43 coat hooks that our legislators spent OUR money to purchase. CLICK HERE.

August 22, 2006 - 21:33
Democrat U.S. Senate candidate Harold Ford, Jr. is touting an internal poll that shows him leading Republican candidate Bob Corker. There is still a lot to happen in the next 70 days or so. CLICK HERE.

KARR FIRST CONFESSED TO THE JONBENET RAMSEY KILLING 5 YEARS AGO.
August 22, 2006 - 08:30
The confessed killer of young JonBenet Ramsey apparently has confessed before. In California. Clearly they did not take him seriously. Should we? The guy is certainly guilty of something; I'm just not sure his misdeeds have anything to do with this particular murder. CLICK HERE. |

TEACHER BURNS FLAG IN KENTUCKY CLASSROOM.
August 22, 2006 - 08:43
A 7th grade civics teacher in Kentucky is under fire for firing up a couple of small American flags in his classroom as part of a writing assignment on free speech. The knee-jerk reaction to this story is one of outrage, and it may be justified outrage. Certainly there was bad judgement in burning anything in a classroom, whether it was leaves, flags, books, or anything else. And the "free speech no matter what" crowd will defend his actions on this count while they would probably not defend a teacher who wore a Klan robe and burned a cross to evoke emotions during a session on civil rights. But putting all of that aside for a moment, would there be a teaching justification to burning the flag as part of understanding the First Amendment? Arguably, even those who find the act of burning the flag reprehensible might agree that actually SEEING a flag burn and then writing about it is perhaps a better learning experience than simply talking about the act of burning a flag. Students who might not be that upset about flag burning in theory might have a different perspective having experienced it. Perhaps writing about the rights of free speech and the balance of respecting that symbol of our country is more poignant and personal in the wake of actually witnessing the act. The teacher may have acted improperly, and perhaps the intent was to propagandize against out country, which would be an abuse of the power given to that teacher. But maybe, just maybe, there is more to the story than a crackpot Leftie getting his jollies by burning a flag. Perhaps he is just a good teacher who was trying to push his students to think and dig a little deeper on an assignment that is really pretty important. His method was certainly questionable, but maybe we should withhold judgement until we better understand his intentions. CLICK HERE.

FRIST APPROVAL-DISAPPROVAL RATING IN TENNESSEE SHOWS PROBLEMS.
August 22, 2006 - 12:07
As Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist sets his sights on running for President in 2008 he may want to focus some attention on mending fences in Tennessee first. According to the latest Survey USA tracking poll Frist has a 49% approval, 44% disapproval rating from Tennessee voters. Senator Lamar Alexander enjoys a 53% approval, 38% disapproval rating in the same poll data. Folks in Iowa and New Hampshire pay attention to stuff like this. CLICK HERE. |

IS HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON HOT????
August 22, 2006 - 14:00
No, seriously, some Libs actually make the argument that Hillary's good looks and sex appeal will be a distraction on the campaign trail. No, I am not making this up. Some people really believe that her "hotness" will make it difficult for people to take her seriously as a candidate. QUIT LAUGHING! I am serious here. No, really! CLICK HERE.
