BUSH WANTS ROBERTS TO REPLACE RHENQUIST.
September 5, 2005 - 09:30
President Bush has decided to appoint Judge John Roberts as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Roberts' confirmation hearings to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Conner were to begin yesterday. By picking Roberts, who seemed on track to fairly easy confirmation, the President avoids a contentious battle with the critics in the U.S. Senate while the nation deals with the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. The President asked that Roberts be confirmed by October 3 so that the high court can begin the fall session with a full panel of 9 judges. O'Conner had resigned, but said she would stay on the court until her successor was confirmed. Thus, if Roberts is confirmed, the process of filling O'Conner's seat would wait for at least a while. WHY DID THE MAYOR OF NEW ORLEANS FAIL TO ACT? WHY DID THE MAYOR OF NEW ORLEANS FAIL TO ACT?
September 5, 2005 - 09:34
Democrats have no problem organizing massive efforts to bus the poor to the polls on election day. Why couldn't they do the same thing to get the poor out of New Orleans BEFORE the hurricane struck? Perhaps it is just a matter of priorities.

It is becoming increasingly clear that the tragedy in New Orleans is a direct result of inaction and incompetence by Governor Blanco and Mayor Nagin.  For example, i
f you want to know what Mayor Nagin SHOULD have done, click on the following link to read the City of New Orleans' excellent Hurricane Preparedness plan which, if implemented, would have saved the lives of almost everyone who tragically died. A number that will likely exceed a thousand. CLICK HERE.

The plan correctly anticipates that approximately 100,000 residents would be unable or unwilling to leave. Therefore, as soon as a hurricane reaches Category 3 intensity, it is the MAYOR's exclusive responsibility to implement a FORCED evacuation no later than 72 hours in advance of landfall - well before any possible communications disruption. The plan states that all public transportation systems (buses, etc.) are to be used, and are to be assisted by city police. Instead, Mayor Nagin did nothing. The buses sit neatly parked and idle, and the people were left to fend for themselves.

Louisiana disaster plan, pg 13, para 5 , dated 01/00

'The primary means of hurricane evacuation will be personal vehicles. School and municipal buses, government-owned vehicles and vehicles provided by volunteer agencies may be used to provide transportation for individuals who lack transportation and require assistance in evacuating'...
