PASSPORT CHIPS TO BE ENCRYPTED After protests from business travel representatives, the State Department modified its plan to issue new passports embedded with tiny radio chips that transmit information to electronic devices at customs and immigration stations. The main objection was that the chips could put travelers in danger abroad by transmitting easy-to-intercept data identifying American nationality and other personal information. The State Department said it would modify the chips, called radio frequency identification tags, with encryption technology to greatly reduce the potential for eavesdropping.
