ECONOMIC AFTERMATH Early evidence of how much stress Katrina has put on the national economy will be piling up this week. Did higher gasoline prices make shoppers more thrifty? Chain-store sales figures compiled by the International Council of Shopping Centers, due out tomorrow, and government retail sales figures, coming out on Wednesday, should provide clues. Did $70 oil crimp manufacturing? Manufacturing surveys being released Friday by the New York and Philadelphia Federal Reserve Banks may have some answers to that question. We will learn more about inflation prospects from tomorrow's report on producer prices and Friday's data on consumer prices. Jobless claims out Thursday may actually show a decline (people fleeing the hurricane had no way to fill out forms) before surging in the weeks ahead...
