World Business Briefing | Asia: South Korea: Samsung’s Profit Rises
Samsung Electronics said its net profit rose 16 percent in the third quarter, topping estimates on strong sales of its memory chips. Samsung, the world’s largest memory chip manufacturer, earned 2.19 trillion won ($2.3 billion) in the three months ended Sept. 30, up from 1.88 trillion won a year earlier. Sales during the quarter rose 4.7 percent, to 15.22 trillion won ($15.9 billion). Samsung said profit margins were increased by its memory chip business as it took advantage of a global surge in prices of dynamic-random-access chips. Sales in its semiconductor business rose 7 percent from the same period in 2005, with memory chips rising 5 percent...

World Business Briefing | Asia: India: Outsourcing Firm’s Profit Rises 47%
Tata Consultancy Services, the largest outsourcing firm in India, said its quarterly profit rose 47 percent, to 10.19 billion rupees ($225 million), exceeding expectations, as demand rose for software and back-office services from overseas customers. Tata, based in Mumbai, said it added 58 new customers in the quarter, which ended Sept. 30, and nearly 9,000 employees to take the total headcount to more than 78,000. The results followed a similarly strong report from Infosys, another outsourcing company, last week, and helped set off a rally on the Mumbai stock market index, which closed with a gain of 1.5 percent to a record 12,928 points...

The offer valued Popolare Italiana, which is based in Lodi, at 12 euros a share, 16 percent higher than the closing price on Friday. Popolare Italiana and Popolare di Verona will create a holding company and give investors 0.43 of a new share for every Popolare Italiana share and one of its shares for every Popolare di Verona share. World Business Briefing | Europe: Britain: Nuclear Plants to Be Shut
The British Energy Group, producer of about 20 percent of Britain’s electricity, said nuclear reactors at two plants would be shut because of cracks in boilers, setting off a 24 percent decline in the company’s share price. The reactors, at the Hinkley Point B plant on the coast of Somerset, in southwestern England, and Hunterston B, on the west coast of Scotland, may be out of action for months, but there was no threat to public safety, the company said. The two plants account for one-quarter of British Energy’s nuclear capacity. The British government controls about 66 percent of the company, which owns 8 of the country’s 12 operating nuclear power plants...

World Business Briefing | Europe: The Netherlands: Profit Up at Royal Philips
Royal Philips Electronics reported a sharp increase in third-quarter net profit, resulting mostly from the sale of a majority stake in its semiconductor division. Operating profit fell because of a charge for asbestos-related liabilities, but the company said that its core operations were healthy and growing. Net profit was 4.24 billion euros ($5.32 billion), up from 1.44 billion euros a year earlier. Sales increased 1 percent, to 6.31 billion euros ($7.92 billion), missing the 6.47 billion euros ($8.12 billion) forecast by analysts. An analyst, Eric de Graaf of Petercam, said the results were “a little above expectation” but the surprise asbestos charge was weighing on shares. Sales and profits increased at Philips’s medical and lighting divisions, its two most profitable arms after the divestment of the semiconductor division. Sales fell 5 percent at the company’s consumer electronics division, which makes DVD recorders and flat-screen TV’s...
