World Business Briefing | Europe: Switzerland: Novartis Plans U.S. Vaccine Plant
The Swiss drug maker Novartis said it would invest $600 million to build the first plant in the United States to develop flu vaccines using advanced cell-culture techniques. The techniques would replace the time-consuming, 50-year-old vaccine technology that requires live chicken eggs and six months’ brewing time. Construction on the plant, which will be in Holly Springs, N.C., is expected to begin in 2007. Novartis said the site would produce up to 50 million doses for use in the United States. “We are taking the lead in moving flu cell-culture vaccine manufacturing closer to a commercial reality now that the site for a U.S. manufacturing plant has been chosen and the first E.U. submission for a flu cell-culture vaccine have been completed,” Dr. Daniel Vasella, above, chief executive of Novartis, said in a statement...

World Business Briefing | Americas: Brazil: Food Company to Reject Takeover Bid
Shareholders in Perdigăo, the Brazilian food company, will reject a takeover bid of 3.7 billion reais ($1.7 billion) by Sadia, a chicken and turkey exporter, Perdigăo’s chief executive, Nildemar Secches, said. Investors holding at least 55 percent of Perdigăo’s shares believe the offer by Sadia is too low, Mr. Secches said. Sadia said it would pay as much as 27.88 reais a share for all existing shares of Perdigăo, 21 percent more than Perdigăo’s closing share price on July 14. “The funds believe the price is insufficient,” Mr. Secches said. “More than 50 percent of shareholders have formally expressed that they won’t sell, which renders the offer void.” A Sadia spokesman, Mauro Teixeira, declined to comment on Mr. Secches’s statement...

World Business Briefing | Europe: Britain: Judge Clears Rosneft Stock Listing
A British judge cleared the way for shares in the Russian state-controlled oil company Rosneft to be listed on the London Stock Exchange, rejecting Yukos’s argument that allowing the stock to trade would constitute the sale of stolen property. Rosneft was given the court’s approval to sell its shares Wednesday as planned. Its shares began trading on Monday on an exchange in Moscow. A Yukos spokeswoman, Claire Davidson, said the company was considering an appeal to a higher court. Yukos had claimed that the flotation would be tantamount to money laundering because 70 percent of the value of Rosneft’s shares resulted from the seizure and sale of Yukos assets by the Russian government...

SHOULD AMERICAN TAXPAYERS PAY THE TAB TO BAILOUT THE BIG THREE AUTOMAKERS?
    NO WAY, NO HOW!!!
YES, THE INDUSTRY IS MUCH TOO IMPORTANT FOR US TO LET IT FAIL.
IT DEPENDS ON THE TERMS OF THE DEAL. WHAT INTEREST RATE WILL THEY PAY FOR THE CASH? WHAT DO WE GET AS COLLATERAL?
LET'S BAILOUT TWO OF THE THREE AND LET ONE FAIL. THEY SHOULD COMPETE TO BE IN THE TOP TWO BY CUTTING COSTS AND WAGES!
YES, BECAUSE WE CAN SAVE THEM JUST LIKE WE SAVED THE BANKS, INSURANCE COMPANIES, ETC.
    NOT SURE.
