The Barrick Gold Corporation, the world’s biggest gold producer, made an unsolicited bid to acquire NovaGold Resources, based in Vancouver, British Columbia, for about $1.53 billion to expand in Alaska and British Columbia. Canadian retail sales unexpectedly fell 0.6 percent in May, the biggest drop since September. Airbus acknowledged that it had reinforced the rear fuselage of its superjumbo A380 after problems were detected but said the issue did not cause further delays in the plane’s production timetable. An Airbus spokeswoman, Barbara Kracht, sought to play down a report in the German weekly Der Spiegel describing troubles with a section of fuselage.
