Foreign Briefs: Canadian Bank Profit Nearly Doubles
Toronto-Dominion Bank, one of Canada’s largest lenders by assets, said third-quarter profit almost doubled on higher trading fees and increased earnings from its United States discount brokerage unit. Net income for the period ended July 31 climbed to 796 million Canadian dollars ($717 million), or 1.09 Canadian dollars a share, from 411 million Canadian dollars, or 0.58 dollar, a year earlier, the bank said. Excluding one-time items, profit was 1.21 dollars a share. Revenue rose 6.1 percent, to 3.23 billion dollars. “The Ameritrade results are fabulous,” said David Baskin, president of Baskin Financial Services in Toronto, which does not own Toronto-Dominion shares. “The problem is that the growth is coming from a cyclical business.”...
