Manulife said the deal would double its number of Canadian wealth management advisers and triple its assets under administration in that business. The deal is part of a plan by Manulife of Toronto to expand its mutual funds unit. The takeover creates a sales force of 1,500 independent advisers and a business with about 19 billion Canadian dollars ($17.7 billion) in assets under administration. The price was not disclosed...

Saudi Telecom bought the shares from a Malaysian billionaire, T. Ananda Krishnan, who last month offered to buy the 40 percent that he did not already control in Maxis, which is based in Kuala Lumpur and is the country?s largest mobile phone operator. Maxis has 14 million subscribers in Malaysia and India. Alstom, a maker of coal-fired power stations, agreed to buy Ecotècnia of Spain to enter the wind energy market. Alstom will pay 350 million euros ($471 million) for Ecotècnia, which also makes solar panels, it said. The purchase will help Alstom, which is based in Paris, expand in the United States and Asia, it said. Buying Ecotècnia strengthens Alstom?s presence in renewable energy as governments seek alternatives to coal, gas and oil. World Business Briefing: Altria to Expand Cigarette Output in Europe
The Altria Group, the cigarette maker, will close a North Carolina factory and increase European production to save $335 million a year by 2011. The shutdown of the plant in Cabarrus County will result in a one-time charge of $325 million in the second quarter, Altria said. The company, which is based in New York, may be preparing to spin off its international unit, analysts and investors said. Factories in Europe will take over production of Marlboros and other cigarettes bound for Japan and the Middle East, which are currently being made in North Carolina. All of Altria?s United States output will be shifted to Richmond, Va. Closing the North Carolina facility, which employs 2,500, will cost about 10 cents a share in the second quarter, Altria said. Expenses will total $670 million by 2011...
