Court Rules on Evidence of Lawmaker
A federal appeals court temporarily blocked the Justice Department from reviewing evidence seized in the House offices of Representative William J. Jefferson, Democrat of Louisiana, while Mr. Jefferson challenged the constitutionality of the search. Two judges on a three-judge panel, Janice Rogers Brown and Thomas B. Griffith of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, said the ruling “should not be construed in any way as a ruling on the merits” of his appeal. The Justice Department has said that Mr. Jefferson is under investigation for a variety of possible crimes, including bribery, and that a search of his home turned up $90,000 in cash hidden in his kitchen freezer intended as a payoff to the vice president of Nigeria in exchange for contracts in that oil-rich African nation. Mr. Jefferson has denied wrongdoing...

Reuters Group raised its full-year revenue growth forecast after better-than-expected sales growth in the first half, even as net profit fell because of one-time gains a year earlier. The company, a provider of financial information and data, said it now expected full-year revenue growth of 5 percent to 6 percent, up from a previous forecast of around 5 percent. First-half revenue grew 12 percent to £1.28 billion ($2.36 billion), beating analysts’ expectations. Net income fell 22 percent to £96 million ($177 million) from £123 million a year earlier, when the results were assisted by asset sales and discontinued operations. The United States-traded shares rose 6.6 percent, or $2.74, to close at $44.19...

Bharti Airtel, India’s biggest mobile phone services provider, announced a 48 percent growth in quarterly profit, exceeding expectations. The earnings were helped by strong growth in its subscriber base. New Delhi-based Bharti, which is one-third owned by Singapore Telecom and about 10 percent owned by Vodafone Group, said its profits in the quarter ended in June grew to 7.55 billion rupees ($165 million) from 5.1 billion rupees a year ago. Sales rose 53 percent, to 38.6 billion rupees ($838 million) as Bharti added 3.65 million customers in the quarter. The company has nearly 25 million subscribers in more than 4,000 cities and towns...

Sears Canada said it earned 18.1 million Canadian dollars ($15.9 million), or 17 Canadian cents a share, in the quarter ended July 1. That compares with a profit of 10.8 million Canadian dollars ($9.5 million), or 10 Canadian cents a share, in the period a year ago. The company said sales fell 6.2 percent to 1.43 billion Canadian dollars, from 1.52 billion in the year-earlier period, because of the sale of a unit.
