World Business Briefing: Canada: Top Court Upholds Limits on Tobacco Ads
Canada?s highest court upheld a law limiting tobacco advertising, ruling that although the restrictions limited the rights of cigarette companies to free speech the curbs were justified by the need to improve public health. The Supreme Court judges said there was nothing wrong with the 1997 law that banned broadcast commercials and advertising aimed at young people and that obliged companies to put large graphic warning labels on cigarette packages. Canada?s three big tobacco companies had argued the limitations unfairly infringed their right of free expression. But in a unanimous decision, the court said the need to protect public health took precedence...

World Business Briefing: Russia: Gazprom?s Profit Doubled in 2006
Gazprom, Russia?s natural gas export monopoly, said 2006 profit doubled, to a record $22.6 billion, beating estimates, as it sold more fuel at higher prices. Net income surged 97 percent, to 613.3 billion rubles, from 311.1 billion rubles a year earlier, the state-run company said. The profit equals $22.6 billion at the average ruble rate for the period and is 8.2 percent higher than the median estimate of six analysts in a Bloomberg survey. Rising prices in Europe, where Gazprom has a quarter of the market, and increased shipments to former Soviet nations drove the gain in earnings, the highest ever reported by a Russian company. Gazprom, based in Moscow, relies entirely on exports for profit because it loses money on sales in Russia, where prices are capped...
