World Business Briefing: BMW Profit Is Short of Forecasts
BMW’s third-quarter profit fell short of expectations as accounting charges put the brakes on what should have been an easy comparison with the 2005 period, when it took a big hit from a derivative contract. Norbert Reithofer, who succeeded Helmut Panke as chief executive in September, also damped investor hopes that he might be more generous in returning cash to shareholders than was his predecessor, causing the stock price to drop. Pretax profit rose 9.4 percent, to 720 million euros ($919 million) in the quarter, below expectations of 742 million euros, despite in-line results at its core automotive business as write-downs on financial instruments again hurt earnings. A year ago, BMW had to book a 175 million euro noncash pretax expense for a bond option exchangeable into shares of the British aircraft engine maker Rolls-Royce, after the latter’s stock sharply appreciated in the third quarter. BMW reaffirmed its forecast for 4 billion euros in full-year pretax profit, which includes a one-time gain of 375 million euros from selling Rolls-Royce shares this year...

World Business Briefing: A Cut in Corporate Tax Rates in Germany
The German government agreed on a plan to cut its average corporate tax rate in a bid to encourage investment in the country, which has Europe’s largest economy. The step will take Germany from having the highest tax in Europe to one that is broadly in line with the other rich countries of Western Europe. After months of negotiations, the Christian Democrats and Social Democrats — which form the coalition governing Germany — decided to reduce the average rate from 38.7 percent to about 29 percent, beginning Jan. 1, 2008. The measure radically lowers Germany’s nominal rate of taxation — a crucial factor in international perceptions of the business environment — but will ease the overall tax burden by only about $6.4 billion. To offset the rate reduction, the plan foresees broadening the tax base by restricting deductions of interest payments, licensing fees and other costs...

World Business Briefing: Earnings Decline at BASF
The chemical maker BASF said that third-quarter profit fell by 24 percent because of costs related to the acquisition of an American rival, Engelhard, and plant closings. It also announced that it would cut another 2,000 jobs. The company earned 613 million euros ($782 million) in the period, compared with 808 million euros a year earlier. That performance fell short of the 629 million euros forecast by analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires. Sales rose 28 percent, to 13.29 billion euros from 10.36 billion euros. BASF, based in Ludwigshafen, cut 4,000 jobs, or about 30 percent of its work force, at the time of the Engelhard acquisition to help cut costs by some $400 million. BASF said that it would cut another 2,000 jobs because of acquisitions, including 800 from Engelhard and 200 at the Degussa unit it acquired. It also warned that it would have to spend another 200 million euros to fold the units into its operations. Shares of BASF were down to 67.67 euros...

World Business Briefing: German Unemployment Dips Below 10%
Germany’s unemployment rate dropped below 10 percent last month for the first time in four years, government figures showed, underlining the recovery of Europe’s biggest economy after years of stagnation. The unadjusted jobless rate fell to 9.8 percent in October from 10.1 percent in September. The number of Germans registered as unemployed fell by 153,000, to 4.085 million. The jobless rate was last below 10 percent in November 2002, when it was 9.7 percent...

World Business Briefing: Indian Outsourcing Company’s Net Soars
One of the fastest-growing outsourcing services companies, Cognizant Technology Solutions, said quarterly earnings grew 50 percent as customers continued to send work offshore in areas like financial services and health care. Cognizant, which is based in Teaneck, N.J., but has the bulk of its development operations in India, said net income in the quarter rose to $61 million, compared with $40.6 million in the period a year earlier. Revenue rose 60 percent, to $377.5 million. It said it would invest $200 million through 2008 to expand its infrastructure in India to add more workers, spending on acquiring land and constructing buildings in Coimbatore, Kolkata, Pune, Hyderabad and at its Indian base in Chennai...

World Business Briefing: Sales Rise at Royal Ahold
Royal Ahold, the operator of the grocery chains Stop & Shop, Giant and Albert Heijn, said that third-quarter sales rose 0.7 percent and warned that margins were slipping under heavy competition in the United States. Revenue in the period edged up, to 10.3 billion euros ($13.1 billion) from 10.25 billion euros a year earlier, better than the 10.17 billion euros ($12.98 billion) analysts had expected. Ahold has more than two-thirds of its sales in the United States, where it operates several grocery chains as well as U.S. Foodservice, which sells bulk food to cafeterias. Ahold said sales in that unit increased 5 percent, to $4.5 billion. An accounting scandal at Foodservice brought Ahold to the brink of bankruptcy in 2003, but the unit has been performing well in recent months. Shares of Ahold fell 5 cents, to close at $10.54 on the New York Stock Exchange...
