World Business Briefing: Canada: Court Rejects Wal-Mart
The Supreme Court of Canada rejected an appeal from Wal-Mart Canada over efforts to unionize another store in Quebec. As is always the case, the high court offered no reasons for its decision. The court?s move appears to open the way for the automatic certification of a store in Gatineau, a city across a river from Ottawa. ?We?re disappointed but not surprised, because the Supreme Court rarely hears cases like this,? said Yanik Deschênes, a spokesman for Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart wanted a court order requiring that Quebec?s labor board conduct a secret ballot of employees. The United Food and Commercial Workers has asked for automatic certification under Quebec law based on the number of union membership cards it signed at the outlet...

World Business Briefing: Belgium: Small Step in News Search Dispute
Belgian French-language newspapers were back on Google after agreeing that the search engine can link to their Web sites, the first signs of a thaw in a copyright dispute. But neither has so far settled a major part of the dispute: the use of newspaper article links on Google News. In February, Google lost a lawsuit filed by the newspapers, forcing it to remove headlines and links to news articles posted on its Google News service and stored in its search engine?s cache without the copyright owners? permission. In a joint statement, Google and the newspapers? copyright group Copiepresse said they had decided that Google could once again list the newspapers on the search engine...

World Business Briefing: The Netherlands: Unilever Profit Up
Unilever, which owns brands like Knorr soup, Dove soap and Ben & Jerry?s ice cream, reported an increase of just 1 percent in first-quarter profit, but underlying growth beat expectations. The company said net profit increased to 1.1 billion euros ($1.46 billion), from 1.06 billion euros a year earlier. Sales climbed 2.1 percent, to 3.54 billion euros ($4.82 billion). Underlying sales, excluding acquired or discontinued businesses and factoring out currency fluctuations, advanced 5.7 percent, beating the company?s target of 5 percent growth. Patrick Cescau, the chief executive, above, said that the company faced ?significant headwind from rising agricultural commodity costs,? which might require price increases. But he said he was confident that the combined benefit of internal growth and improved efficiency would put the company in a good position to reach its objectives for 2007...

Analysts said they expected Xstrata, based in Zug, Switzerland, to respond with a new bid. LionOre, based in Toronto, has operations in Australia, Botswana and South Africa.
