World Business Briefing: China: Bid for British Mine Company
A consortium led by China?s biggest gold mining company, the Zijin Mining Group, has made a $185.4 million bid for the British copper mining company Monterrico Metals in what could become China?s first outright takeover of an overseas listed company. The acquisition would be the latest in a series of low-profile but substantial purchases of overseas mining assets by Chinese companies, part of the country?s quest to diversify supplies of strategically important resources. Monterrico, which is based in London, holds rights to the still-undeveloped Rio Blanco copper and molybdenum deposits in northern Peru, which the company says could yield up to 25 millions tons of copper ore a year. Zijin holds a 45 percent share in the consortium, with a Chinese copper mining company, Tongling, taking 35 percent and Xiamen C& D, a trading and real estate conglomerate, holding 20 percent, Zijin said...

World Business Briefing: Mexico: Pemex Oil Field Declining
Production at Mexico?s giant Cantarell oil field will fall by 15 percent this year, Jesús Reyes Heróles, left, the director general of Petróleos Mexicanos, Mexico?s state-owned oil monopoly, said. Output dropped 13.1 percent last year. Mr. Reyes Heróles, a former energy minister who took over at Pemex in December, said other projects would help make up for the shortfall at Cantarell, which last year accounted for about 55 percent of Pemex?s overall production of 3.26 million barrels a day. Mexico is a top supplier of imported oil to the United States. Mr. Reyes Heróles said that the company needed additional investment of $8 billion to $10 billion a year to keep up production, develop new reserves, expand its refining capacity and modernize its storage and transport network. But Pemex is closed to private investment and cannot finance the investment itself. Last year, Pemex sales surpassed $100 billion but it paid $79 billion in taxes, which accounted for almost 40 percent of Mexico?s federal budget...

The company, which already operates stores in 12 countries, said that it also planned to open stores in Los Angeles, San Diego and Las Vegas. Tesco said that it had chosen the Phoenix area because of its high population growth and the strong potential of its expanding market. The city is among the fastest growing in the United States...

Exceptions can be granted only through the company?s head of compliance, she said. World Business Briefing: France: Peugeot?s Profit Declines
The French automaker Peugeot-Citroën said that its earnings tumbled last year on weak worldwide sales, a poor product lineup, the cost of complying with new European pollution standards and higher prices for raw materials. Peugeot?s new chief executive, Christian Streiff, said that the company?s loss of market share in Europe, where competition is fierce, is one of its main problems. The company said net income fell to 176 million euros ($228 million) from 1.03 billion euros in 2005. Revenue rose 0.6 percent, to 56.59 billion euros ($73.31 billion)...
