Iraqi and U.S. forces killed more than 250 insurgents in fierce battles over control of the Shiite holy city of Najaf today, an interior ministry official tells CNN. The official said hundreds of gunmen attacked with the aim of killing Shia clerics including Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani.
