U.S. gets first woman speaker |
Rep. Nancy Pelosi on Thursday became the first woman speaker of the House of Representatives. In a symbolic tradition, John Boehner passed the House gavel to the new speaker. Pelosi accepted the position "in the spirit of partnership, not partisanship."

Rep. Nancy Pelosi on Thursday became the first woman to lead the House of Representatives, as Democrats took control of both chambers of Congress. The House voted 233-202 to elect the California Democrat over Rep. John Boehner of Ohio, the new Republican minority leader.
