THE MORE YOU LOOK AT THE AMNESTY BILL, THE WORSE IT LOOKS.

Last week the U.S. Senate passed an immigration reform bill that supporters insist is not “amnesty,” even though those who have illegally entered our country, illegally worked in our country, and in most cases committed criminal acts to cover up their illegal activity, are completely forgiven. By any logical definition of the term “amnesty”, that is exactly what the Senate has passed.
But the immigration reform bill does much more damage to our national interests than merely granting amnesty to millions of criminals. For example, the “shamnesty” plan also includes provisions which:
*Allow illegals to attend college at in-state tuition rates. If your own son or daughter attends college in Alabama or Mississippi next fall they will be socked with additional fees far in excess of what illegals residing in those states will pay. Crossing a state line results in financial punishment for American citizens, yet those who illegally cross our national border are rewarded.
*Illegals who committed identity theft to cover-up their illegal work in this country get to keep the benefits of their crime by collecting social security payments “earned” during their criminal activity. In other words, the U.S. Senate would let a burglar break into your home and steal your television, then give him amnesty for the crime AND let him keep the television set as a bonus. What a country!
*Illegals employed in the agricultural industry cannot be fired except for “just cause.” American citizens in the same industry do not have the same job protection. Illegals must be paid the “prevailing wage;” but no such guarantee extends to all American workers. Shouldn’t American citizens at least be provided the same rights as criminals?
*Supporters of the legislation claim that illegals must pay all the taxes they owe to get on track for citizenship. But that is simply not true. Illegals must pay a $3200 fine over eight years and then only have to pay taxes for three out of the five years they illegally worked here. I am sure most American citizens would like the same courtesy. Just let us pay $3200 and then choose which three years out of five that we will pay taxes. Sign me up today!! Employers of illegals are also not liable for any taxes they failed to pay in connection with the illegal labor they brought to this country.
*Finally, Senate leaders claim that they are committed to “securing our borders.” But a last-minute amendment requires consultation with the Mexican government before construction of any additions to the border fence that only covers about 25% of our 2000 mile border with Mexico. This essentially gives Mexico veto power over any efforts to expand our border security.
The Senate immigration bill is over 600 pages long. It is a safe bet that most of the Senators who voted for it never read the entire bill. More Americans should. This could be the most destructive piece of legislation that has ever passed in the U.S. Senate. Unless the House puts a stop to this madness, generations of Americans will suffer dearly for their inattention to the details and their responsibilities to our nation.

A GLARING OMISSION. -

During President Bush’s prime time speech on immigration Monday night he threw out a lot of numbers. A 1,200 mile border with Mexico. 6,000 National Guardsmen who will patrol that border under his plan. 6,000 new Border Patrol agents who will be added over the next couple of years. Those are all very interesting numbers. But the most important number was ignored by the President: how many immigrants will be allowed into this country if we follow his lead?

Despite the nearly hysterical hype by NBC and the sporting world, most Americans have been tuning out of the Winter Olympics. Most television networks chose to air re-runs rather than challenging the expected viewing domination of the Olympics. Last Friday Democrat State Senator Don McLeary announced he was switching to the Republican Party. Although Republicans already enjoyed a numerical majority in the State Senate, the move by McLeary gives the Republicans an even larger margin of 18-15 over the Democrats. It’s become an annual ritual. Each December we engage in a fight for Christmas against those who wish to eliminate it from existence.
