A SUDDEN FANCY FOR UNTRACEABLE CELL PHONES

August 14, 2006 - August 20, 2006
In the past week there has been an inexplicable rush on untraceable, disposable cell phones by young Muslim men here in the United States. These stories have received little attention because of the bigger story of a disrupted terror plot being planned by dozens of young Muslim men in Britain. But perhaps the surge in the sale of these sorts of cell phones -- the kind that can be used and discarded in order to make intelligence gathering more difficult; the kind that can be used to detonate bombs – deserves more attention.

Last Wednesday two men were arrested in Ohio and charged with money laundering in support of terrorism. The two men, Osama Sabhi Abdulhassan and Ali Houssaiky, were from Dearborn, Michigan and were found in possession of a dozen untraceable, disposable cell phones, $11,000 in cash, airplane passenger lists and information on airport security checkpoints. It turns out that the two have purchased over 600 such phones over the past few months, and were on their way through Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina to purchase more. They initially lied to police about their activities, but later admitted they were selling them to someone in Dearborn who was sending them overseas.

Last Friday another three young Arab men were arrested in Michigan and charged with providing material support for terrorism acts and terrorism surveillance. They had about a thousand of the disposable, untraceable cell phones in their van and receipts showing that they had purchased more in Wisconsin the day before. Police say they had thrown away the phone chargers for many of the phones, which indicates they were being sent overseas where different electrical outlets are used. Because stores have been alerted to the possibility of potential terrorist use of the phones, the men were buying them three at a time and paying cash. An alert store clerk notified police after the three men repeatedly came through her register buying three phones at a time.

Finally, another Michigan resident was arrested in Pennsylvania after being stopped on a traffic violation and being found with 15 of the untraceable, disposable cell phones and $4,200 cash. Malkhaz Zakutashvilli admitted to being in the country illegally, although he had a Michigan driver’s license.

All of these men, along with those being held and questioned in the foiled terror plot to blow up planes bound for America, are innocent in the eyes of the law until they are proved guilty. But why do so many young, Muslim men in the Dearborn, Michigan area suddenly have such an interest in making bulk purchases of phones that can be used for terrorist purposes? More importantly, why is the mainstream media ignoring the obvious connections between these separate arrests in three different states?

Perhaps there is no terrorist connection to the purchase of large numbers of untraceable, disposable cell phones that can be used to evade government intelligence gathering and detonate roadside bombs. But young Muslim men buying sports drink bottles and mp3 players in London meant nothing until the discovery of their link to a terror plot that could have meant the death of thousands of innocent people flying in planes over the Atlantic Ocean. America is at war, and the sooner we all wake up to that fact the safer we will be.

EASIER SAID THAN DONE. - August 7, 2006 - August 14, 2006
On Saturday the three Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate gathered together in Nashville to put their bitter and divisive primary behind them. Ed Bryant and Van Hilleary both pledged their support for Bob Corker and strenuously condemned “liberal Democrat” Harold Ford. Corker graciously thanked them and noted that they were both honorable and decent men. So the Republican Party is now unified behind its nominee and bygones are bygones? Maybe. Or, maybe not.

“Unity” is something th...
CONVENTIONAL WISDOM? - July 9, 2006 - July 16, 2006
The proposed new convention center for downtown Nashville hasn’t received a lot of media attention lately, but that does not mean the proposal has died. Advocates have simply gone underground to line up stealth support for the half billion dollar boondoggle.

The plan for a new convention facility, to be placed south of Broadway, was announced with great fanfare in February. But devilish details threatened to derail it before the public relations campaign was fully underway. The announc...
THE TENNESSEE INCOME TAX ISSUE IS "DEAD?" - June 6, 2006 - June 12, 2006
A Tennessee income tax is not on the ballot this year, but the prime proponent of a state income tax IS back on the ballot. Former State Senator Bob Rochelle, who lead the fight for the income tax and later (after he decided he couldn’t get re-elected carrying that baggage) as a member of the pro-income tax stacked Tax Study Commission is running for the state senate again. As he kicked off his campaign last week he pronounced the state income tax a “dead issue.” Riiiiight. There are only two t...
THE MORE YOU LOOK AT THE AMNESTY BILL, THE WORSE IT LOOKS. - May 29, 2006 - June 5, 2006
Last week the U.S. Senate passed an immigration reform bill that supporters insist is not “amnesty,” even though those who have illegally entered our country, illegally worked in our country, and in most cases committed criminal acts to cover up their illegal activity, are completely forgiven. By any logical definition of the term “amnesty”, that is exactly what the Senate has passed.

But the immigration reform bill does much more damage to our national interests than merely granting am...
A GLARING OMISSION. - May 15, 2006 - May 22, 2006
During President Bush’s prime time speech on immigration Monday night he threw out a lot of numbers. A 1,200 mile border with Mexico. 6,000 National Guardsmen who will patrol that border under his plan. 6,000 new Border Patrol agents who will be added over the next couple of years. Those are all very interesting numbers. But the most important number was ignored by the President: how many immigrants will be allowed into this country if we follow his lead?

A study conducted by the Herita...
